Colin Hugh Abbott trying to save the trees.

This is Jarrahdale Road, just before you come into the town of Jarrahdale, Western Australia. Main Roads wants to put a controlled-access highway through here (the Tonkin Highway). If they do this, all these beautiful trees would be cut down. This photograph appeared in the West Australian newspaper circa 2000. When the reporter and cameraman (camerawoman actually!) arrived, I was shovelling soil, so I was embarrassed by the state of my clothes (not that I ever had much dress sense). Jarrahdale is in the Darling Range, about 50 kilometres south of Perth. At this point here, we are about 800 feet above sea level. It tends to be a couple of degrees cooler than Perth in winter, and perhaps a couple of degrees warmer in summer. But temperatures will certainly rise if they put a bloody highway through here!
